Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre Celebrates 50 Years of Apprenticeship Excellence at Landmark Awards Evening

The Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre marked its 50th anniversary last Friday with a major celebration event honouring five decades of apprenticeship success and recognising the achievements of its 2024 and 2025 apprentices.

Held at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Hotel on the run up to National Apprenticeship Week, the event brought together NHS leaders, industry partners, training providers, and former apprentices from across the region. Guests enjoyed a dinner, awards ceremony, live entertainment, and speeches reflecting on the Centre’s long‑standing contribution to developing skilled estates and engineering professionals for the NHS.

Established in 1974 by Mr W. Murray OBE, the Centre began as an apprentice training scheme and went on to influence the 1981 Model Scheme for Engineering and Building Apprenticeships. Since then, more than 96% of apprentices have completed their training and progressed into roles within NHS Trusts across the North East and Yorkshire, with many advancing into senior or chartered positions.

Today, the Centre is hosted by North Tees & Hartlepool Solutions LLP and continues to support all NHS employers in the region, including: QE Facilities, CHoICE Sunderland, South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS FT, NTW Solutions, Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management, South Tees Hospitals NHS FT and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS FT. It maintains ISO 9001:2015 and Matrix Standard accreditation, supported by funding from NHS England North East and Yorkshire, NHS Trust and organisation levy contributions, and the Government’s Education and Skills Funding Agency.

The anniversary event was supported by fourteen leading estates and engineering organisations, alongside the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM) and the Health Estates and Facilities Management Association (HEFMA). Their sponsorship reflects the strong industry partnerships that have helped sustain and grow the programme over five decades.

The evening was hosted by Wayne Carr, Director at City Hospitals Independent Commercial Enterprises (CHoICE) Facilities Services, one of the scheme’s eight apprentice providers.

“The Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre marking its 50th anniversary is a huge achievement and something I’m hugely proud of for all those involved and personally as an ex-apprentice of the scheme. The scheme is the envy of the country and having successfully trained over 500 apprentices during its operation, rightly so. As chair I delighted to say we are looking forward to the next 50 years!! And with support of the excellent team in place we are well placed to too train the apprentices the NHS Estates teams so desperately need”

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the annual apprentice awards, each named in honour of influential figures who helped shape the region’s apprenticeship standards:

• The J. R. Fletcher 1st Year and 3rd Year Apprentice of the Year Awards Recognising the legacy of John Robert Fletcher, a pioneering NHS engineer dedicated to developing future talent.
• The Bill Murray OBE 2nd Year Apprentice of the Year Award Celebrating the vision of Mr W. Murray OBE, whose leadership established the Assessment Centre in 1974.
• The 4th Year Apprentice of the Year – Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre Management Review Group Trophy Awarded on behalf of senior NHS leaders who ensure the programme continues to meet evolving estates service needs.
• The HEFMA Estates Apprenticeship of the Year Award Honouring exceptional achievement within the wider estates and facilities community.

These awards recognise excellence across every stage of the apprenticeship journey, celebrating apprentices who are still progressing through their training as well as those who have recently completed their programmes.

The 50th anniversary celebration highlighted the Centre’s enduring role in supporting the NHS workforce and its commitment to developing the next generation of estates and engineering professionals.

As it enters its next chapter, the Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre remains focused on delivering high‑quality, industry‑aligned training that equips apprentices with the skills and opportunities needed to build long and successful NHS careers.
